Clinical Psychologist
Dr. Alex Doherty
I work collaboratively with you during our sessions, offering time and space for us to reach a shared understanding of your difficulties and experiences. I am trained to offer a range of evidence based treatments and work flexibly, often drawing upon different therapeutic approaches to best suit your needs.
I started using Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) as a part of my core training and have continued to enhance my CBT skills throughout my career. Alongside using the CBT framework I also draw upon Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion-Focused therapy in my sessions. These two approaches, though different, both nurture self-acceptance and confidence.
Throughout my doctoral course I have also received a high level of training in Systemic therapy. Systemic practice recognises that problems are often maintained and embedded within our interpersonal relationships and the 'roles' we play in certain relationships.
I also draw upon ideas from Narrative therapy and have carried out research linked with this approach. Narrative therapy aims to separate the individual from the 'problem' and is an empowering and non-pathologising approach.
